Although Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica ‘White Swirl’) sound as if blooming in chilly weather might be expected, horticulturalists know otherwise. Late spring to early summer is the bloom period for these delicate beauties. Seasonality’s hypnotic come-and-go melody might mesmerize us into thinking that the garden is predictable. And then — as if to tickle our humility out of hibernation AND to honor our optimism — blooms a Siberian Iris in October!
Tucked into mounds of crisp, colorful fall foliage embellishing the sloped flowerbeds west and northwest of the icehouse, this exuberant rhizome has defied expectations. Rebelling against climate conventions and centuries of gardening wisdom, this specimen seems to believe that Siberian Iris in October makes more sense than blossoms in May or June.
A rebel! A beautiful, standalone rebel. But don’t take my word for it.

Late spring, indeed. Or late autumn.
And Rosslyn, we enjoy defying the norm, and rebellious blooms are more than welcome.
If you’re unfamiliar with Siberian Iris (in October or otherwise), I offer you a few words from wiser sources.
