Gazing upward into the night sky, focusing on the moon, even a mute moon, searching for the promise of illumination in a sea of darkness. Drawn to light. Reflection of light.
Ever find yourself inadvertently staring at the moon, wondering less about the moon itself than everything else?
Tonight, September 28, 2024, the moon is a waning crescent, only about 1/8th (12.8%) visible to the naked, wondering eye. A sexy sliver siren-calling silently, a mute moon reflecting distant clarity even as obscurity prevails. But soon, on October 2 a new moon will emerge and gradually wax fuller and fuller until October 17.
These muted moon photographs were made four years ago tonight, on September 28, 2020. A waxing gibbous moon, almost full, but veiled by fall foliage. Colorful leaves desaturated by nightfall, crisply crinkling in the breeze, almost ready to fall. But not yet. After the full moon for sure. Unless windstorms loosen them early.
Beauty pulls the eye inevitably, irresistibly. But I suspect there’s something more than that. When meandering deep in my mind, wonder-wandering, the mute moon beckons. Perhaps simply a point to tether visual distraction to allow for a deeper untethering. Or maybe a beacon guiding my inner navigation…
