One year ago I snapped a few exterior photos of the icehouse. Nothing especially notable except for the time capsule effect 365 days later. Rosslyn’s icehouse rehabilitation nearing completion in July 2023 side-by-side with the same perspective today.
One year ago, the icehouse exterior had begun to resemble its finished form. Windows in, clapboard and trim installed, deck and hot tub complete. But hardscape and softscape far, far from complete. Still a pretty raw job site for all practical purposes.
Today the site work is complete, the lawn is established, the stonework and landscaping are beginning to feel as if they’ve been established for years or decades, maybe even centuries.
One year ago, the East façade actually looked pretty similar to today. But, to no small degree, that’s the magical (but misleading) power of photographic perspective and framing.
Today, the same view captures, not only the completed elevation, but a building comfortably situated within a cohesive and complete landscape. A portrait painted into its context. New grass, plantings, and deck furniture (just barely visible in front of the hot tub), and no sign of construction debris or dirt piles. An integrated whole, welcoming and timeless.
I’ve been unable to put my hands on a photograph taken from the northwest corner, looking back at the icehouse and carriage barn with our home in the background. When I come across one, I’ll add it to this post. For now, this 45° snapshot shows you that I saw this afternoon looking back at this reimagined environment, so long imagined, and so much appreciated now that it is complete.
