Bugs can be startlingly beautiful. Please allow me to introduce you to a green burgundy stink bug (Banasa dimidiata) contentedly “shading” beneath a clapboard overhang on Rosslyn’s carriage barn.
I’m well aware that there are those who’d rather not come across a stink bug of any sort, green burgundy, or otherwise. The noisome odors and the tendency to find their way into homes (and then attract others via more odors until into a small infestation draws attention) is primarily to blame.
But, for all practical purposes, these insect neighbors are benign. Some, this green burgundy stink bug, for example, are dazzling to look upon. Doesn’t it look like a science fiction alien of some sort? And that brilliant green?!
Sometimes wildlife is charismatic for its dominant status in the food chain. Other times wild wonders are tiny enough to almost overlook them and yet they can be compelling for a uniquely mesmerizing characteristic. Pattern and color, for example. Just imagine this green burgundy stink bug’s outer armor and wings adorning a tunic or scarf. It would be glamorous! So too is this pinky finger nail sized wild fauna.
