Soon, Glen assured me this afternoon, the gates will be hung for the privacy fence enclosure west of Rosslyn’s carriage barn. How soon? Tomorrow, if the weather cooperates. In preparation for this long anticipated threshold, I offer you a sneak peek at the gate hardware, installation of which began today.
In the photograph above two 19-5/8” acorn strap hinges have been secured to the horizontal rails of a gate. A matching pair will be echoed on the second gate, lending an historic mien and handsome symmetry to this service entrance.
Pintles, to be installed on each gate post, will support the gates and provide sturdy pivot points.
In the second photograph a bracket is also visible. This hand forged hardware will secure a sturdy board (aka barricade bar) in lieu of latch or other hardware. This simple but effective means for closing a gate is what we use on the external gates as well, because there are virtually no chance of mechanical failure, and the rigidity of the board reduces strain caused by wind, etc.
And I’ll close this post with a fun photo that Tony made to show me the fine tuning that they undertook today to finalize the trim on thegate posts. That’s the cropped foreground element you see with blue painter’s tape on the left side of the photograph. But this “Chinese box” or “Russian doll” image also captures Glen inside the carriage barn texting me a photo and update that about the gate hardware. His silhouette is just visible in front of the west façade of our home.
What do you think?
