After months of creative collaboration, problem solving, and persistent pursuit of an ideal — a functional and aesthetically well integrated privacy fence to complete the icehouse courtyard — it’s time to celebrate. Rosslyn’s carriage barn enclosed is complete!

After approximately a year of landscaping (hardscaping and softscaping), carpentry, and painting, the grounds west of the carriage barn and icehouse have coalesced into a cohesive and welcoming environment as timeless as the historic buildings that they adjoin. A true triumph of teamwork!

Bob and Phil’s site work and various subsequent installments (including drainage, base course, top soiling, hydro seeding, crushed stone, and installing the helical piers that form the structural skeleton of the carriage barn enclosure) have been fundamental to this component of the icehouse rehab.

Tony, Supi, Aaron, Pam, Calvin, Peter’s sons, and Glen have agonized over the stone walls, stone steps, and stone terrace, braiding salvaged and repurposed stone (from two centuries worth of Rosslyn construction) into a character-rich outdoor living and entertaining space that seamlessly complements the rest of this historic property.

Glen and Tony, upcycled our stump-to-lumber cedar into the ingredients for this slowly incubated privacy fence design, problem solving at every turn, and crafted this simple but elegant solution into existence. The result looks and feels as if it might have been present since the 1800s!
And Teddi braided greenery and blooms back into a raw construction site, transforming this tabula rasa into a flourishing icehouse white garden. It will become lovelier and more lush with each growing season as the plants become established.
Bravo, all!
