It’s a bumper crop among the blackberry brambles, another sweet seasonality celebration of midsummer. So many juicy treats, and two weeks ahead of this berry burst last summer.
I popped the jumbo blackberry into my mouth… An explosion of inky indulgence!
And only then did I consider the extraordinary size, the possibly unique opportunity to document this polyploidy wonder. Too late. The festival of flavor was already subsiding on my palate. Opportunity missed. (Source: Jumbo Blackberry)
It seems that we have fewer jumbo blackberries this season, but so-so many medium sized berries. And so tasty!
Averse to a verse about blackberry brambles and the decadence they attempt to protect with unwelcoming spines?
Blackberry Brambles
This tangle of thorny canes
weave a wild and reckless maze
camouflaged by canopy,
sunup-to-sundown shadows,
sprays of berries blackening,
almost-August abundance,
and the prospect of lips and
fingertips stained purple-black,
tongue tingling with syrup,
a tang tinged treacle,
inky indulgence.
Can you taste the blackberries?
What do you think?
